  Chaplain

Hi, I'm Bill Freeman, Chaplain of Interfaith Congregation. Before I became a member of the ministry I was a member of the media - TV news reporter, radio talk show host, magazine editor - for many years. Dates seem to have some significance in my life.

I felt called to the ministry on my birthday in 2001. My birthday is 9-11. I was baptized in 2003, on December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. And I preached about starting an interfaith group on October 25, 2009, Reformation Sunday. I hope all those dates mean that my chaplaincy will be about justice, peace and reforming religion to include everyone.

I have an affinity for all faiths and study and experience them whenever I can, so even though I've received a Master of Divinity degree from a Christian seminary and been ordained as a Christian minister, I eventually found Christianity too confining and exclusionary. So now I call myself an Interfaith Chaplain, feeling as Gandhi did, "I am a Muslim and a Hindu and a Christian and a Jew," and hoping to make Dr. King's Dream a reality, "when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing."

I offer several chaplain services, in addition to leading our Sunday service and offering Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Counseling to people in need.

I perform W
edding Ceremonies and Recommitment Ceremonies for religious, nonreligious, interfaith and same-sex couples. I meet with the couple once (more if needed) to hear their story and plan their ceremony. I perform a rehearsal, if desired. I perform the ceremony.

I perform Baby Blessings (adult ones, too) for religious, nonreligious, interfaith and same-sex families. This would take the place of a Baptism/Christening and would recognize that a child of creation is a child of God (or of the Spirit, or of the human family, etc.). I meet with the family once (more if needed) to plan the blessing. I perform the blessing.

I perform Divorce Ceremonies for religious, nonreligious, interfaith and same-sex couples wanting to bring closure to a relationship. I meet with the individual or couple once (more if needed) to hear their story and plan their divorce ceremony. I perform the divorce ceremony.

I conduct Memorial Services for religious and nonreligious people. I meet with the family once (more if needed) to offer counseling, hear about the life of the person who is no longer with us physically and plan the memorial service. I conduct the memorial service.
